Charles Norton
Writer, Hip Hop Educator & Teaching ArtistBIOGRAPHY
Charles Norton is a Hip Hop Educator, teaching artist, and Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern Foreign Languages at Morehouse College. He earned a PhD in Aesthetics from Université Paris Nanterre in December 2020, and he is preparing monographs in French and English based on his research in education and social engagement in global Hip Hop cultures. Prior to joining the faculty at Morehouse, he taught full-time at the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, and the University of Paris. He has also held temporary positions at the University of Rwanda, Pima County Community College, and Off The Beaten Track anthropology field school in Malta. Beyond academia, he has served in the US Peace Corps three times (Cameroon, Haiti, and Rwanda) and has worked as a consultant with Microsoft India, AXA Banque in France, the Platform of Human Rights Organisations of Malta, and the Seattle Sounders Football Club.
PROJECT
During the 2022 Nawat Fes Residency, Charles will be working on three works of academic writing addressing global Hip Hop culture, education, and social justice. The first, Les droits de l’homme et le hip-hop à Malte, is a French-language journal article that uses ethnography to investigate Hip Hop and human rights in Malta. He will also be writing monographs in English (Human Rights and Empowerment in Global Hip Hop Cultures) and French (Éducation et engagement dans le hip-hop global). Beyond writing, Charles looks forward to improving his Arabic language skills and to making progress on creative projects in jewelry and fashion design.
