BIOGRAPHY

After a bachelor’s degree in scenography from the École Supérieure de Théâtre de Montréal in 2016, Gabrielle Carrère completed her MFA at the University of Québec in Montréal. She has participated in various artist residencies, including NES in Iceland, Intercambiador in Madrid and Cerdeira Art in Portugal. She also exhibited in Spain, including at the White Lab Gallery in Madrid, and at the Centro Negra in Blanca, among other venues. In 2021, she exhibited at Art Mûr gallery and at AVE gallery in Montréal.

PROJECT

The work of Gabrielle Carrère is anchored in a practice of sculpture where she creates figurative works that represent humans and nature in their weaknesses and vulnerabilities. She is interested more particularly in the figure of ruin and in an aesthetic of disappearance. Gabrielle mainly works in miniature, where she creates places and universes on a reduced scale. By a set of assemblies and combinations, she builds fictitious worlds, a community of figures that alone carries its symbolic charges. Clay is her main material. It reminds her of the earth, of fertility, a body she can transform into new beginnings. Through her sculptural narrations, Gabrielle Carrère tries to shape worlds between darkness and light, to create fragments of humanity that survive in and illuminate a world of darkness.
